Families FAQs
How many fellowship positions are available?
There will be approximately
25-30 fellowship opportunities available.
Is there any monetary compensation
for FICRS Scholars?
Yes. Fellowship stipends are $25,000 per year. Scholars
are also provided with roundtrip travel to the foreign site, insurance through
the FICRS Support Center or insurance reimbursement ($4,000 for 12 months of coverage),
and educational materials. No provision for loan forgiveness is involved in the
compensation package.
Will the inability to speak a foreign language
be a problem for Scholars or will it adversely affect his/her prospects for selection?
Generally not, however, some programs might identify the need or advisability
of a specific foreign language and the knowledge of such a language would be a
clear benefit in the application process. While not applicable to every foreign
site, most fellowship opportunities are located in areas where English is predominantly
spoken. In cases when it is not, there will be opportunities available for some
language training. That said, if an applicant does possess foreign language skills
they may note such on their application.
I would like to study the
possible foreign training sites that Scholars might be assigned to. Is there a
way to do this?
Yes. On our main page you may find links to information
on each of our foreign sites.
What measures will be taken to assure
Scholars' safety while located at the foreign site?
New Scholars will
be brought together for a three-week orientation program during which the instruction
in bioethical framework of patient-oriented clinical research, research methodology,
and advice regarding personal health and safety will be addressed.
In addition, you may find applicable information from one of the following sites:
- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
- International Travel Information—U.S. State Department
Will Scholars be covered under their current
health insurance while on assignment abroad during the fellowship?
Perhaps.
A scholar may still be covered through his/her institution. If not, s/he will
need to acquire health insurance through the FICRS Support Center or an outside
entity. In order to participate in the fellowship program, proof of health insurance
must be provided. The Scholar will be given $4,000 for 12 months of health coverage.
If my spouse is accepted into the program, will I and our child(ren)
be able to travel and stay abroad as well? What about health insurance for us?
Yes, although no extra stipend or funding will be provided. Regarding health
insurance coverage, if either the Scholar or his/her family is not covered by
their university healthcare provider, they will have to purchase health care insurance.
Will Scholars be able to return to the United States during their
fellowship for holidays, family functions, or to visit?
While a return
trip in case of an emergency is always acceptable, those awarded a fellowship,
in order to most fully experience what such a unique opportunity has to offer,
are expected to remain at their fellowship sites throughout the duration of the
program. However, Scholars are given 10 days during the year to spend away from
the site, but these dates have to be negotiated with their mentor.
