Other Opportunities in Global Health Research
National Institute of Infectious Disease and Allergy’s Fellowship Program
This fellowship program aims to train the next generation of prevention scientists in the research of HIV and related conditions associated with substance use. A slot is open for a postdoctoral fellow for July 2008. There is a wide range of mentors offering expertise in areas such as social and molecular epidemiology, psychology, health services and policy-oriented research as well as skills in GIS, RDS and the design and analysis of behavioral interventions. The program is in close proximity to Mexico, which has led to a very active research program on HIV, STIs and TB among injecting drug users, sex workers and their partners, and mobile populations. However, we also have research opportunities in other parts of the world. Interested candidates should contact Steffanie A. Strathdee at sstrathdee@ucsd.edu.
HIVCorps Internships in Zambia
The UAB-affiliated Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia (CIDRZ) has an internship program, termed "HIVCorps." The HIVCorps program sponsors volunteers in HIV prevention, treatment, and research activities in Lusaka, Zambia. Expatriate volunteers - usually pre-medical / medical students, or recent MPH graduates - are paired with Zambian counterparts of similar training and experience and work under a UAB-CIDRZ faculty mentor. This is a one year commitment.

Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research Foundation
The Sarnoff Fellowship Program offers research opportunities for outstanding medical students to explore careers in cardiovascular research. Applicants must be enrolled in accredited U.S. medical schools. Sarnoff Fellows conduct intensive work in a research laboratory, located in the United States, for one year.
CDC Epidemiology Elective
http://www.cdc.gov/epo/dapht/eis/elective.htm
The Epidemiology Program Office (EPO) of the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers an elective in epidemiology for
senior medical and veterinary students. The purpose of the elective is to
provide an introduction to preventive medicine, public health and the principles
of applied epidemiology.
Elective students are offered the opportunity to actively assist in epidemiologic investigations of infectious diseases and areas such as cancer, congenital malformations, environmental and occupational diseases, injuries (intentional and unintentional), chronic diseases, and reproductive health and population dynamics. Students are also exposed to the day-to-day operation of CDC's nationwide surveillance system. Most elective assignments are based at CDC headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Erasmus Summer Programme
The Erasmus Summer Programme, which takes place in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, on 11-29 August 2008, is a three-week program with 33 courses in quantitative medical research. Open to all health professions, the programme focuses on the basics common to all applied medical and health care research. In addition, the programme provides courses for those particularly interested in clinical medicine, general practice and public health, as well as for epidemiologists, geneticist and biostatisticians. The session dedicated to global public health, which I am co-presenting with Robert Beaglehole, aims to promote:
--A greater awareness of the full range of global public health challenges.
--An increased understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of epidemiology and public health in responding to these challenges, particularly chronic diseases and cardiovascular disease in particular.
--A greater understanding of how to increase the positive effects of globalisation on health and reduce the negative effects.
