Our first two weeks

Up to Haiti

Our first two weeks

Posted by Patrice Espinosa at August 08. 2008

Karl and I have been in Haiti since July 28th and we are settled in. For the first month we are both shadowing the doctors, lab techs, nurses, and counselors from the different clinics at GHESKIO. That way we get to know how the system works and make connections with as many people from work as we can before starting our projects. We live in condominium compound called "Le Clos". Karl and I are currently sharing a room and live with 6 people in a three bedroom condo. We are picked up everyday by a GHESKIO driver from Le Clos and taken home after work in the late afternoon. We don't have too much freedom in terms of going out and about and rely on other people for rides. Luckily we have a pool, tennis courts, and yoga studio where we can stretch our limbs at Le Clos. Our first task is to become proficient in Creole and we began Creole lessons yesterday. We both feel very welcome by GHESKIO, the doctors, and staff. Although our interaction with the outside Haitian community is limited we both enjoy what we know of the Haitian culture so far!
