IMT is also an important center for TB. IMT is located in the northern area of Lima where incidence of active TB is over 172/100,000. HIV-TB co-infection is a growing concern in Peru. Thirty to 40% of HIV patients have current or a recent history of active tuberculosis. Complications like drug interactions, and immune reconstitution inflammatory syndromes are very common during concomitant therapy of both infections.

Housing is available at a wide array of type, location and cost in Lima. Students visiting Lima for prolonged periods of time prefer renting apartments in the residential area of Miraflores and surrounding districts. Participants may also prefer to rent rooms at family homes or share apartment rentals with other students visiting Lima.

Apartment prices range from US $300 to $600 per month for small ones in Miraflores. ‘Pension’ in family homes may be more convenient in price and usually includes one or two meals per day. Lunch is available at the University campus and ranges from 2 to 4 US$. Groceries can be purchased in local supermarkets at affordable prices. Transportation in local buses is about US $1.00 each way; if taxis are preferred they range from US $5 to $8 each way.
