The Public Health Foundation (PHFI), along with its three network partners, namely The Aga Khan University of Pakistan (AKU), Karachi, Pakistan; All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS), New Delhi, India; and the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF), Chennai, India, were selected as an Ovations and NIH-NHLBI Center of Excellence for Cardio-metabolic Disease Control and Prevention.

Research Opportunities:

There are many research opportunities related to a variety of chronic diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and chronic kidney disease.

A number of ongoing population-based studies of chronic diseases in India and Pakistan are part of this network. MDRF and the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University have established a Population-Based Global Diabetes Research Center (GDRC) in Chennai, India, which serves as a hub for population-based research and large intervention trials. PHFI and AIIMS investigators collaborate in an industrial cohort study and in a Delhi children cohort’s study. AKU investigators are involved in community-based studies of hypertension and kidney disease.

Housing/Meals/Transportation:

PHFI and its partners will assist the US scholars in finding an apartment of their choice in the nearby neighborhood areas. The monthly expense for a decent accommodation on rent ranges between 400-500 USD plus expenses on cable television, Internet access, water, and electricity. Also, the scholars may use cheap public transport or could arrange for daily pick-up service at their convenience.

Health Issues:

As a precautionary measure against water and food borne disease, the scholars are advised to drink and eat from trusted sources alone.

See the U.S. Centers for Disease Control Web site and The Yellow Book: Health Information for International Travel. The NIH/FICRS program mandates that all Scholars see a physician prior to their assignment abroad.

Safety Issues:

See the U.S. State Department Web site for additional information.
