The Laboratory Sciences Division at the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Diseases Research in Bangladesh (ICDDR,B) has state of the art laboratories specializing in Acute Respiratory Infections, Enteric Microbiology, Environmental Microbiology, Immunology, Molecular Genetics, Nutritional Biochemistry, Parasitology, Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Tuberculosis and Virology. The Division also has a strong service component including Clinical Microbiology, Pathology, Molecular and Serodiagnostics, Biochemistry, and Animal Resources. The Division has a DNA sequencer, quantitative PCR machine, ultracentrifuge, FACS, gene microarray reader and other relevant equipment for different research purposes. Every unit of the Laboratory Sciences Division has skilled scientific staff who can act as mentors for foreign trainees.

The collaboration between the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) Bloomberg School of Public Health, the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (UPCH) and A.B. PRISMA, a Peruvian non- governmental organization (NGO) has provided a rich environment for research and training for more than 20 years.
AB PRISMA – is an NGO which has been the base for much of the epidemiologic studies we have done over the years. This NGO is the largest Peruvian health and microcredit non profit in the country.
Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia – is the premier Science University in Peru and houses the Infectious Disease Laboratory in the Dept of Microbiology.

Furthermore, ICDDR,B was recently named Ovations and NIH-National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, Centre for Control of Chronic Diseases in Bangladesh. This clinical fellows program will involve a collaboration between the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Texas and the Institute of Tropical Medicine Alexander von Humboldt, of the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, Lima, Peru.
The Instituto de Medicina Tropical Alexander von Humboldt of the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia Lima, Perú, is recognized as one of the top centers in the world for tropical medicine. Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia Medical School is recognized as one of the outstanding medical schools in Latin America. Since its founding in 1968 the Instituto de Medicina Tropical "Alexander von Humboldt" (IMT) has risen to international stature in service, research and training in infectious diseases and tropical medicine. IMT is located within the Hospital Nacional Cayetano Heredia, which provides 5,000 HIV related outpatient visits per year, diagnoses 40 new HIV cases per month, and is responsible for 15% of the total Peruvian patient population who receive HAART within the National antiretroviral Program in Peru.

The Federal University of Ceará (UFC) in Fortaleza is a center for tropical disease research in Brazil that has made major contributions to the understanding of endemic diseases including diarrhea, diarrheal diseases, malnutrition and leishmaniasis. It is a superior education institution part of the Brazilian Education Ministry, created in June, 25th 1955, being currently one of the top Universities in Northeast-Brazil, dedicated to education, research and extension, with links to the inner state. The Federal University of Ceara is the only federal institution in Ceara state. Three University campus are located in the city of Fortaleza (2.4 million inhabitants), capital of the state of Ceara (8.0 million inhabitants) (www.ibge.gov.br). The Porangabussu campus holds the Health Medical Center, which includes courses of Medicine, Pharmacy and Nursing. The University also has a Law School and Exact Sciences, including Physics, Chemistry, Architecture and Engineering schools. The Health Science Center includes a University Hospital, Health Science Library, clinics, and research medical buildings. The Institute of Biomedicine, which houses Dr. Aldo Lima’s laboratory, is located in the Porangabussu campus. The University rector ship is the administrative core of the University that includes an international office to deal with international affairs.
