CAPRISA is a not for profit research organization that was established in 2002 through a consortium of five key institutions: University of KwaZulu- Natal, Columbia University, University of Cape Town, University of the Western Cape, and the National Institute for Communicable Diseases. The CAPRISA headquarters are located in the Doris Duke Medical Research Institute Research Institute at the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine, University of KwaZulu-Natal.

The University of Cape Town (UCT), which celebrated its 175th anniversary in 2004, seeks to be “an outstanding teaching and research university, educating for life, and addressing the challenges facing our society”. It is a medium-sized institution of some 20 000 students and some 4 500 staff, of whom just over half are academic and research staff. The Faculty of Health Sciences comprises five schools, namely: Schools of Adult Clinical Medicine, Child and Adolescent Health, Public Health and Family Medicine, Biomedical Sciences and Health and Rehabilitation. Each school groups several clinical and non- clinical departments. The Department of Medicine, which is in the School of Adult Clinical Medicine, consists of 16 clinical divisions each with a postgraduate training programme (i.e., Acute General Medicine, Cardiology, Dermatology, Endocrinology and Diabetology, Gastroenterology, Geriatric Medicine, Haematology, Hepatology, Infectious Diseases and HIV Medicine, Immunology and Allergology, Lipidology, Pharmacology, Nephrology and Hypertension, Neurology, Pulmonology, and Rheumatology) and 7 major research units, which are the UCT Bioethics Centre, the Medical Research Council (MRC)/UCT Liver Research Centre, MRC/UCT/University of the Western Cape (UWC) Research Unit for Traditional Medicines, UCT/University College London (UCL) Hatter Institute for Cardiovascular Research, the Albertina and Walter Sisulu Institute for Aging in Africa, the UCT Lung Institute and the Desmond Tutu HIV Research Centre.

University of KwaZulu Natal, Durban is formed since January 2004 as a result of a merger between the former universities of Natal and Durban-Westville, the University of KwaZulu-Natal adopted a vision of the “Premier University of African Scholarship” with research innovation as a cornerstone of this new higher learning institution. The University is made up of five different campuses including the internationally recognised Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine located in Durban, adjacent to King Edward VIII academic hospital. This medical school was founded in 1950 and only during its 50th anniversary in 2000 that the former president and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Nelson R Mandela agreed to link his name to the school. The Medical Microbiology Research Unit is part of the Department of Infection Control and Medical Microbiology, School of Laboratory Medicine at the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine. The research unit is located in the Doris Duke Medical Research Institute and is a leading unit and centre of excellence for TB and STD research. It is currently working in collaboration with the newly founded KwaZulu-Natal Research Institute for TB and HIV (K-RITH). The unit is home to the leading academics and impressive researchers willing to mentor the young generation of scientists and clinical researchers.
Church of Scotland Hospital, Tugela Ferry, South Africa
Church of Scotland Hospital, Tugela Ferry: Church of Scotland Hospital (CoSH) is a provincial government district hospital which serves ~180,000 rural Zulu people with high rates of poverty and illiteracy. This is the home of Tugela Ferry Care and Research Collaboration (TFCaRes), a multinational collaboration between Yale University School of Medicine, Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, University of KwaZulu Natal, Durban, Philanjalo NGO, and the KwaZulu Natal Department of Health.
Reproductive Health and HIV Research Unit, University of Witwatersrand, South Africa
The Reproductive Health & HIV Research Unit (RHRU) is one of the largest training and research units in the University of the Witwatersrand. The RHRU is recognised as a leading institution in the field of HIV/AIDS and reproductive health, and has been designated a World Health Organisation (WHO) Collaborating Centre. Since 1994, the RHRU has provided extensive technical assistance to the National and Provincial Departments of Health in the field of reproductive health and HIV/AIDS, including ARV roll out planning, STI’s, barrier methods, maternal health, high transmission areas and family planning. The RHRU is currently in receipt of large grants from PEPFAR, NIH, WHO, the UK Department for International Development (DFID), International Partnership for Microbicides (IPM) the Microbicide Development Programme, and the Gates Foundation. Because of its success in implementing programmes the RHRU has continued to secure donor funding and has expanded rapidly since it was established. RHRU’s is a research syndicate of the Wits Health Consortium, a wholly owned subsidiary of the University of the Witwatersrand.
