Moi University School of Medicine, Kenya

Warren Alpert School of Medicine at Brown University is partnered with the Moi University School of Medicine (MUSOM) in Eldoret, Kenya and has a decade long history of collaboration, emphasizing the tripartite mission of any medical school- care, teaching and research. The Moi University School of Medicine and its associated Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) was the second medical school, founded in Kenya in 1990. It serves the western half of the country, acting to provide care locally for the area of Eldoret and Uasin Gishu District as well as to provide referral care for its 13 associated rural health centers, scattered across western Kenya.

Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences, Tanzania

The Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) is a successor to the Muhimbili University College of Health Sciences (MUCHS), which was a constituent College of the University of Dar es Salaam. MUCHS was established by an Act of Parliament, Act No 9 of 1991, when the then Faculty of Medicine was upgraded to a College. The School was started to augment the meager supply of doctors then being produced for the country from Makerere University College of the University of East Africa. One of the greatest strengths of this site is its strong linkages with community groups and policy makers at the regional and national levels. This provides an added dimension that enhances trainees' experiences.

National Center for AIDS/STD Control and Prevention (NCAIDS) & Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC)

The National Center for AIDS/STD Control and Prevention (NCAIDS) is the one of the largest institutes in Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC) in Beijing, the capital city of China. NCAIDS is the nation's leading center for the prevention and control of HIV/AIDS. NCAIDS is responsible for both national HIV/AIDS initiatives and technical support and capacity-building for regional and local activities.

Public Health Foundation of India

The Public Health Foundation (PHFI), along with its three network partners, namely The Aga Khan University of Pakistan (AKU), Karachi, Pakistan; All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS), New Delhi, India; and the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF), Chennai, India, were selected as an Ovations and NIH-NHLBI Center of Excellence for Cardio-metabolic Disease Control and Prevention.

Reproductive Health and HIV Research Unit, University of Witwatersrand, South Africa

The Reproductive Health & HIV Research Unit (RHRU) is one of the largest training and research units in the University of the Witwatersrand. The RHRU is recognised as a leading institution in the field of HIV/AIDS and reproductive health, and has been designated a World Health Organisation (WHO) Collaborating Centre. Since 1994, the RHRU has provided extensive technical assistance to the National and Provincial Departments of Health in the field of reproductive health and HIV/AIDS, including ARV roll out planning, STI’s, barrier methods, maternal health, high transmission areas and family planning. The RHRU is currently in receipt of large grants from PEPFAR, NIH, WHO, the UK Department for International Development (DFID), International Partnership for Microbicides (IPM) the Microbicide Development Programme, and the Gates Foundation. Because of its success in implementing programmes the RHRU has continued to secure donor funding and has expanded rapidly since it was established. RHRU’s is a research syndicate of the Wits Health Consortium, a wholly owned subsidiary of the University of the Witwatersrand.

Shanghai Cancer Institute, China

The Shanghai Cancer Institute (SCI) was founded in 1958 and is an independent institution focused on cancer research affiliated with the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Public Health. The SCI was identified by the WHO as a WHO Collaborating Centre for Research on Cancer in China in 1980. On the approval of the National Science and Technology Committee, the State Key Laboratory of Oncogenes and Related Genes (SKLORG) was established on the basis of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 1985. The Shanghai Research and Development Facilities for Gene Therapy with the GMP level was established within SCI in 1996, and the Cancer Institute of Shanghai Jiaotong University was approved by Chinese Ministry of Education in 2003. SCI’s mission is to conduct research on epidemiology, etiology, and mechanisms of chemical carcinogenesis of cancer to advance the comprehensive prevention and control of cancer.

St. John’s National Academy of Health Sciences, India

St. John’s National Academy of Health Sciences was started to train medical professionals at the highest level and at the same time with an orientation to serve the medically underserved areas of the country. The institutions at St. John’s namely the medical college and the nursing college are amongst the best in the country.

The Botswana-Harvard AIDS Institute

The Botswana-Harvard AIDS Institute (BHP), located on the grounds of Princess Marina Hospital, is a fully outfitted research laboratory and training center. At the heart of BHP's mission is a collaborative approach to conducting clinical and laboratory-based research with an emphasis on training and building local capacity. The research and training initiatives of the BHP focus on questions of epidemiology, virology, molecular biology, immunology, genetics, clinical treatment and social and behavioral medicine relevant to the epidemic in Botswana and southern Africa. The Partnership includes over 20 doctoral level researchers working on site in Botswana and at the Harvard School of Public Health.

The Cancer Institute and Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences

The Cancer Institute and Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CICAMS), was founded in 1958 and is located near Longtan Lake in the southeast of Beijing, China. It is a national center for cancer research, medical education, and research-based prevention of both common and rare cancers. It has a 1,200-bed hospital that possesses state-of-the-art equipment and facilities for cancer diagnosis and treatment. CICAMS is the largest cancer research center in Asia, is a WHO collaborative center for cancer research, and is also a base for clinical drug trials run by the Chinese State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA). At CICAMS, you will not only have the opportunity to work with established leaders in Chinese and global health, but also alongside many students, post-docs, and fellows who all share an interest in cancer, clinical research, and epidemiology.

The Chinese National Center for AIDS/STD Prevention and Control: Laboratory focus

The Chinese National Center for AIDS/STD Prevention and Control (NCAIDS) was established in July 1998 as part of the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine (CAPM). On January 23rd, 2002 the CAPM was restructured and named the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention of which NCAIDS now currently resides. NCAIDS is the leading agency in the prevention and control of AIDS at the national level.

The Federal University of Ceará, Brazil

The Federal University of Ceará (UFC) in Fortaleza is a center for tropical disease research in Brazil that has made major contributions to the understanding of endemic diseases including diarrhea, diarrheal diseases, malnutrition and leishmaniasis. It is a superior education institution part of the Brazilian Education Ministry, created in June, 25th 1955, being currently one of the top Universities in Northeast-Brazil, dedicated to education, research and extension, with links to the inner state. The Federal University of Ceara is the only federal institution in Ceara state. Three University campus are located in the city of Fortaleza (2.4 million inhabitants), capital of the state of Ceara (8.0 million inhabitants) (www.ibge.gov.br). The Porangabussu campus holds the Health Medical Center, which includes courses of Medicine, Pharmacy and Nursing. The University also has a Law School and Exact Sciences, including Physics, Chemistry, Architecture and Engineering schools. The Health Science Center includes a University Hospital, Health Science Library, clinics, and research medical buildings. The Institute of Biomedicine, which houses Dr. Aldo Lima’s laboratory, is located in the Porangabussu campus. The University rector ship is the administrative core of the University that includes an international office to deal with international affairs.

The George Institute, China

The George Institute China is affiliated to Peking University Health Science Center and to University of Sydney via the George Institute Sydney. Trainees at the George Institute China will highly exposed to the high quality research activities in these universities and institutions, especially at the Peking University Health Science Center, which has 8 affiliated hospitals and another 15 teaching hospitals, and more than 40 clinical research institutes and centers focusing on all major medical disciplines. There are many international large scale collaborative research projects running at the George Institute China with colleagues from the University of Sydney and The George Institute Sydney.

The Institute of Nutrition of Central America and Panama, Guatemala

The Institute of Nutrition of Central America and Panama, INCAP, is a specialized center on nutrition of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the Central American Integration System (SICA). INCAP is headquartered in Guatemala and has representatives in each od its eight member countries: Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, and the Dominican Republic.

UNC Project Malawi

The UNC Project is in Lilongwe, Malawi. Over the past 16 years, this project has been active in conducting research and training, as well as providing general medical care, HIV and STI diagnoses and care, and administering the PMTCT program for the city of Lilongwe.

Universidad Autonoma de Baja California

The Universidad Autonoma de Baja California (UABC) is the main state and federally funded university in the State of Baja California. UABC has three campuses in the state with a total of 40,000 students. UABC has 3 schools of medicine, three postgraduate programs in the following areas: 1) public health, 2) health sciences including: nutrition, psychology, dentistry, community health, molecular biology and physiology, 3) family medicine. UABC runs two university community health centers for underserved people (CUMAIs). UABC has existing agreements and research collaboration with all public health provider institutions in the region including hospitals and first and second level clinics. These health facilities offer services ranging from outpatient and inpatient services, preventive medicine in infectious and chronic diseases, urgent and emergency care, surgical care, social work, rehabilitation services, radiology, image and pharmacy services.

Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juarez, Mexico

The University of Texas at EI Paso (UTEP) College of Health Sciences (CHS) serves as a Training Site for Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars and Fellows. UTEP is uniquely situated less than one kilometer from the Mexican border adjacent to Ciudad Juarez - a major metropolitan area of over 1.5 million inhabitants. The College of Health Sciences, is the leading health sciences research center in West Texas and emphasizes border health and minority health in its research programs. CHS, through its 8 academic departments, has ongoing research projects in diabetes, HIV, drug abuse, family violence, occupational injury, environmental health, enteric infection, obesity, tuberculosis and other health problems endemic to the border region. UTEP is a minority-serving institution with a Hispanic student body of nearly 80%. UTEP is a bilingual, bi-cultural university with deep ties to the Ciudad Juarez, Mexico community. CHS has close ties to its partner university, Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juarez, for decades.

Universidad del Desarrollo School of Medicine, Chile

Clinical teaching of the students of School of Medicine is done in two clinical centers and in a network of community health care centers in Santiago. Clinica Alemana is a large private hospital and clinic, while Padre Hurtado is a public hospital providing, together with its community primary care centers, health services to a low income population of 500,000. These centers allows teaching of health sciences and research in different settings broadening students clinical and research experiences.

Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, Ministry of Health National HIV and TB strategy offices, Peru

In Peru, the HIV/AIDS epidemic revolves around core groups of men who have sex with men (MSM) and female sex workers (FSW). The HIV-1 seroprevalence in Lima is approximately 20% in MSM and between 1 and 5% in FSW. This contrasts with rates in the general population of 0.5% among pregnant women. The dynamics of the HIV epidemic in Peru highlight the importance of targeting core groups who are often marginalized and not readily accessible using standard public health measures with interventions to promote HIV testing and prevent transmission. Prostitution in Peru, although not legal, is permitted, and requires periodic STD examination at a Public Health Clinic. Both FSW and MSM are eligible to receive health care at these clinics. With the arrival of the Global Fund in Peru, all HIV-infected people are eligible to receive HAART therapy without charge. University of Washington collaborative research efforts in Peru target FSW and MSM populations and design and conduct interventions aimed at preventing and treating HIV and STD infections in core groups as well as in adolescents and in the general population. Current funded projects include epidemiology and neurologic manifestations of retroviral (HIV, HTLV-1 and 2) infections in high-risk populations (FSW, MSM) and indigenous groups, HPV acquisition in FSW, operational research regarding HIV and TB coinfections, tropical infections of the central nervous system, and cerebrovascular disease.

Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia & A.B. PRISMA, Peru

The collaboration between the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) Bloomberg School of Public Health, the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (UPCH) and A.B. PRISMA, a Peruvian non- governmental organization (NGO) has provided a rich environment for research and training for more than 20 years. AB PRISMA – is an NGO which has been the base for much of the epidemiologic studies we have done over the years. This NGO is the largest Peruvian health and microcredit non profit in the country. Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia – is the premier Science University in Peru and houses the Infectious Disease Laboratory in the Dept of Microbiology.

University Hospital Farhat Hached, Tunisia

The University Hospital Farhat Hached, Sousse, Tunisia, is among the three biggest University hospitals in Tunisia with 35 departments in clinical medicine. It is now leading a project funded by OVATIONS / NHLBI initiative to prevent Chronic Disease in North Africa and Middle East with the technical assistance from the North Karelia Project of the National Institute of Public Health, Helsinki, Finland and the Isfahan Cardiovascular Research Center in Iran. The US partner is the Duluth Medical Research Institute(DMRI) at the University of Minnesota Medical School.
